MUNICH (Reuters) – Petr Cech celebrated a perfect 30th birthday on Sunday after producing another exceptional goalkeeping performance to help Chelsea land their first Champions League trophy. The Czech had a shaky first half of the season but his revival in form has run parallel with the club's overall resurgence since Roberto Di Matteo took over as interim coach in March, and he played a major …

Girl turns birthday into benefit for needy kids
May 20th, 2012Instead, she wanted to donate to a child named Michel, 9, that the Dawsons have sponsored in Honduras since 2009. They exchange letters.
“She asks me to pray for her and her family,” Hope said.
Her father, evangelist Scott Dawson, and mother, Tarra, have helped Hope plan a “Birthday of Hope” event tonight at 6:30 in the main auditorium at Southeastern Bible College, 2545 Valleydale Road. It will be a benefit to help Michel and other needy children in Honduras. The event will feature radio personality Rick Burgess as the keynote speaker and singers Rush of Fools, KJ-52 and Jamie Grace Harper in concert. Birthday cake will be served, provided by Edgar’s Bakery.
Admission is free and open to the public, and there will be a request for donations and sponsorships for Compassion, a ministry that supports children in Honduras.
Burgess and the three Christian musical performers and groups all also sponsor children through Compassion. “Everybody has volunteered; the artists are all coming without pay,” said Scott Dawson. “This is about impoverished children. It’s all about sponsoring kids.”
A donor has pledged to provide up to $10,000 to match any funds raised, he said.
Hope said her school friends have gotten excited and helped her spread word about the event. “They’re saying it’s a great idea,” she said.
Other parents have helped organize, said Tarra Dawson. “They feel like they’re helping these children,” she said.
Hope said she has seen all the musical performers and it will be a worthwhile event. KJ-52 is one of her favorites, she said. “He’s like a funny rapper,” she said. “He has this song about how he’s addicted to Mountain Dew. He’s just fun. He’s the crowd energizer.”
Rush of Fools is an Alabama worship band that has had Christian hit singles. Singer and songwriter Jamie Grace Harper was nominated for a Grammy Award for best contemporary Christian song.
Hope insists that neither her parents nor her friends give her any birthday presents.
“The only present you can bring is to come and bring a donation,” Scott Dawson said. “It’s more about giving kids hope.”
Hope said she doesn’t regret skipping a birthday and presents for herself, and neither does her family.
“I don’t live in the usual family,” she said.

Happy Birthday, Ai Weiwei!
May 18th, 2012Today is the (disputed) birthday of Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei. The successful sculptor, architect and open critic of the Chinese government turns 55 today, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Ai comes from a family of dissident sentimentality, as his mother and poet father were sent to a labor camp in the 1950s for denouncing the Anti-Rightist Movement of the Communist Party in China. From this alternative political position, Ai entered the world of Chinese avant-garde art. His interest in altering readymade objects soon took him to New York in the 1980s, where he studied at Parsons School of Design. When Ai’s father became ill, the artist made his way back to Beijing, where he set up the Beijing East Village, and began publishing literature on what he considered to be a new generation of Chinese artists.
Throughout his career, Ai has created a number of globally exhibited works through his studio, FAKE Design. Most notably, he worked as a consultant for the Beijing Olympics “Bird’s Nest” stadium with the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. But much of his work has retained a sense of political and social meaning, as he continues to confront the political theater in China today. His 2008 exhibit “Snake Ceiling,” which consisted of a serpentine installation of hundreds of black and white kid-sized backpacks, pays homage to the 2008 earthquake that killed thousands of children trapped in a collapsed school buildings in China.
![]()
While Ai has been praised internationally for his art, the provocative and subversive nature of his work, accompanied by his political outspokenness, has triggered a wave of repression from Chinese authorities. Ai was jailed for 81 days in 2010 for allegedly evading taxes amounting to $2.4 million in penalties, and while Ai maintains that his imprisonment was politically motivated, he was forced to pay a $1.3 million bond. Many of his supporters and fellow dissidents rushed to his aid, contributing loans online and in person. Some people were such fervent supporters that they actually tossed cash over the walls of his Berlin studio to help free the artist.
Since his arrest, Ai has been a stringent proponent of the internet as a new frontier for politically-minded Chinese citizens. His Twitter has over 110,000 followers, whose devotion to the artist is formidable. When police began investigating Ai Weiwei’s assistant for spreading pornography online after a photo was detained featuring Ai in the nude, his fans protested the allegation that nudity was synonymous with pornography by tweeting naked pictures of themselves. Ai has used the web to create a performance piece out of his life and show that there is always space free from censorship and authority. He also launched WeiweiCam.com, a website mocking government surveillance that tracked Ai as he worked and slept, which was shut down after only two days.
Last year Ai was named ArtReview’s ‘most powerful artist,‘ showing his worldwide impact to the artistic and activist communities. His passion and bravery present an optimistic view of art’s possibilities. He is not only a talented artist but one of the most influential spirits of our time. Weiwei once said: “I wouldn’t say I’ve become more radical: I was born radical.”
We are so happy you were born, sir. Happy birthday, Ai Weiwei!

May 16th, 2012
Tori-Spelling-teaser-FFN_Celebs_Today_GGFF_040312_8944609120511135956Happy birthday, Tori! Take some time to relax with Dean and the kids.
Tori Spelling, we adored you when you played Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210 and we loved watching you start your family with hubby Dean McDermott. We wish you and your family a great birthday!
Happy birthday, Tori Spelling! Though you made a name for yourself by virtue of being the daughter of megastar producer Aaron Spelling, you’ve carved your own piece of television history as one of the stars of the late, great ‘Beverly Hills 90210′ — supposedly without the casting director’s knowledge of your famous father, no less. 14 years and two babies later, you continue to hover in the public eye through your reality series with husband Dean McDermott, as well as via two positively received memoirs. This coming year, utilizing your connections in Hollywood to forward a humanitarian goal would be a star-studded aim!

Drunk mom late to child’s birthday party hit 100 mph, CHP says
May 16th, 2012A Sonoma County mother who said she was late to her child’s birthday party was arrested on suspicion of driving 100 mph while drunk, authorities said.
Katherine Russell, 34, of Rohnert Park, sped past a CHP officer Friday in a Highway 101 construction zone, officials told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Her Toyota 4Runner was going 100 mph by the time the CHP officer caught up to her, officials said.
Her blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit to drive, authorities said, and she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, driving without a license and traffic violations.

Happy birthday, Mark Zuckerberg. How tech has changed in 28 years.
May 14th, 2012Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg turned 28 on Monday. He was born the same year as Apple’s Macintosh computers.
Barbara Ortutay, Associated Press /
May 14, 2012
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg smiles in this office in Palo Alto, Calif. Zuckerberg turns 28 on Monday, May 14, 2012. He’s considerably younger than the average FORTUNE 500 CEO, of course. But while some investors worry that Zuckerberg is too young to lead Facebook as a public company, experts point out that Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Michael Dell were in their 20s when their companies had IPOs.
Paul Sakuma/AP/FILE
NEW YORK
He famously wears a hoodie, jeans and sneakers, and he was born the year Apple introduced the Macintosh. But Mark Zuckerberg is no boy-CEO.
Facebook’s chief executive turned 28 on Monday, setting in motion the social network’s biggest week ever. The company is expected to start selling stock to the public for the first time and begin trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Friday. The IPO could value Facebook at nearly $100 billion, making it worth more than such iconic companies as Disney, Ford and Kraft Foods.
At 28, Zuckerberg is exactly half the age of the average S&P 500 CEO, according to executive search firm Spencer Stuart. With eight years on the job, he’s logged more time as leader than the average CEO, whose tenure is a little more than seven years, according to Spencer Stuart.

Even so, the pressures of running a public company will undoubtedly take some getting used to. Once Facebook begins selling stock, Zuckerberg will be expected to please a host of new stakeholders, including Wall Street investment firms, hedge funds and pension funds who will pressure him to keep the company growing.
Young as he may seem — especially in that hooded sweatshirt — Zuckerberg will be about the same age as Michael Dell and older than Steve Jobs when those two took their companies, Dell Inc. and Apple Inc., public. In his years as Facebook’s CEO he’s met world leaders, rode a bull in Vietnam while on vacation, started learning Mandarin Chinese and as a personal challenge, wore a tie for the better part of a year.
Facebook, of course, got its start in Zuckerberg’s messy Harvard dorm room in early 2004. Known as Thefacebook.com in those days, the site was created to help Harvard students — and later other college students — connect with one another online. The scrappy website later grew to include high-schoolers, then anyone else with an Internet connection. Today more than 900 million people log in at least once a month, making Facebook the world’s definitive social network.
All along, Zuckerberg has shown a maturity beyond his years. As the site grew rapidly and caught the eye of big media and rival Internet companies, Zuckerberg consistently rebuffed mouth-watering buyout offers, including those from Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc.
“Simply put: we don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services,” Zuckerberg wrote in his letter to prospective shareholders. “And we think this is a good way to build something. These days I think more and more people want to use services from companies that believe in something beyond simply maximizing profits.”
People who’ve observed Zuckerberg closely say his age is an asset. His is the generation that grew up with social networking, with computers all around them and the Internet as something that’s always existed. Many of his employees are younger than him, as are a lot of the up-and-coming technology entrepreneurs with whom he competes.
“I don’t think you could build a company like this if you were an old guy like me,” says David Kirkpatrick, a 59-year-old author who chronicled the company’s early history in “The Facebook Effect.”
Kirkpatrick, who is also founder of Techonomy, a media company that hosts conferences on the relationship between technology and economy and social progress, first met Zuckerberg six years ago. He says he was impressed with his vision, even then.
“It’s the willingness to take risks, the willingness to abide by a very contemporary vision … I don’t think that he’s too young. I think most CEOs are too old.”
Zuckerberg, who lives in Palo Alto, Calif. with his girlfriend and a white Hungarian Puli dog named Beast, has matured as a leader with the help of experienced mentors.
One of his closest advisers is Sheryl Sandberg, whom he hired away from Google in 2008. Zuckerberg, known for sometimes-awkward public appearances, realized that the razor-sharp, people-savvy advertising executive complements his own shortcomings. Sandberg is Zuckerberg’s No. 2, the chief operating officer who oversees advertising and often serves as Facebook’s smiling, public face.
Then there’s Donald Graham, the 66-year-old CEO and chairman of The Washington Post Co., who serves as a mentor to Zuckerberg and holds a seat on Facebook’s board of directors.

Indian firms tweet away on Facebook founder's birthday
May 14th, 2012The 60th birthday party of Parliament was a big conversation opener on Twitter on Sunday. But it was nothing compared to Monday morning tweets when the only talking point on the social networking site appeared to be Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg’s 28th birthday.
Twitter space was getting clogged with birthday wishes as Indian corporates especially could be seen falling over themselves to tweet birthday wishes to Zuckerberg and sharing – in just 160 characters – how his site had changed their company.
Youth fashion brand Fastrack tweeted, “Happy Birthday Mark Zuckerberg. Thanks for giving us a wonderful platform where we can have an amazing conversation with our 3.6 million+ fans.”
Not to be outdone, Café Coffee Day tweeted, “We made 1.9 million friends on Facebook because of you. Thank you.”
AXN India in its tweet didn’t miss the irony that the man who rules Facebook was trending on Twitter! But the cake was taken by several posts from individuals who said they were tweeting birthday wishes to Zuckerberg on Twitter since “Facebook was so boring and they wanted more people to see it!”
Incidentally, while ‘Happy Birthday Zuckerberg’ was trending till late evening on Twitter India, globally it was a rather shortlived trend.
But this is a rather big week for Mr Zuckerberg. Even as he laps up the adulation and good wishes on his birthday, no doubt he must be anxiously awaiting the birthday present that awaits him on Friday when Facebook starts trading on Nasdaq.
With the IPO expected to value his company at $100 billion, Mr Zuckerberg can look forward to more than a few billion dollars in the kitty!

Brain-teasers for a blog birthday
May 12th, 2012
NASA / SDO
Sunspot region 1476 points toward Earth like a loaded gun in this picture from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory. Experts say the active region is capable of generating major X-class flares.
We’re not only closing out the week — we’re closing out the first 10 years of Cosmic Log. It was on May 13, 2002, that I first began noting the follies and mysteries of science, space and society in this space. To mark the occasion, I’m presenting not just one, not just two, but three sets of brain-teasers.
The first puzzle has already played out on the Cosmic Log Facebook page. I asked Facebook followers to figure out which four-digit number is best associated with the picture above, and it just took a couple of minutes for multiple commenters to come up with the answer: 1476, the designation for the active region that’s currently front and center on the sun’s disk and capable of throwing X-class flares in our direction.
Mitch Siff was the first to put it all together, and I’m sending him my last pair of sun-viewing safety glasses, suitable for watching the May 20 annular solar eclipse from his home in Colorado. Michael J. Tiano was also quick on the draw, and he’ll be getting my second-last pair of 3-D glasses, along with a scary 3-D picture of yours truly.
It’s worth noting that a solar storm was one of the first topics tackled in Cosmic Log 10 years ago.
Space Needle unscrambler
Earlier in the week, I reported on the finals of a “Space Race 2012″ competition at Seattle’s Space Needle that resulted in Arizona law-school student Gregory Schneider winning a future suborbital trip into outer space. The final test was to solve a series of 10 brain-teasers while walking around a narrow ring-shaped platform just outside the Needle’s 520-foot-high observation deck. I mentioned a couple of sample questions on Wednesday, but in honor of Cosmic Log’s 10th birthday, here’s the full set of 10 questions. The first commenter to give the correct answers to all 10 teasers — in a single comment, not a series of comments — will be eligible to receive my last pair of giveaway 3-D glasses.
Unscramble the five following words:
1. PALOLO
2. IODEATSR
3. VGATIYR
4. OERREMTETI
5. EFCRCAPTSA
6. How many stars are in the Big Dipper?
7. For the Space Needle’s 50th Anniversary, the roof was painted which color: Orbital Orange, Galaxy Gold, Meteor Melon, Re-entry Red.
8. True or false: The planet Venus rotates clockwise. It is the only planet to do so.
9. Which is NOT the name of a NASA shuttle: Atlantis, Voyager, Discovery, Endeavour.
10. Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first men to walk on the moon in which year: 1968, 1967, 1969, 1966.
Cosmic Log history lesson
Finally, here are some trivia questions about the past 10 years of Cosmic Log. First person to get all the answers correct in a single comment will be eligible to receive a signed copy of my book “The Case for Pluto.” (I’m not holding my breath.)
1. Where did the name “Cosmic Log” come from? A space mission? A TV show? A comic book? Or did I just make it up?
2. Which “Star Trek” actor was interviewed for Cosmic Log? Nichelle Nichols? Leonard Nimoy? William Shatner? George Takei?
3. Which would-be celebrity astronaut was interviewed for Cosmic Log? Lance Bass? Mark Burnett? James Cameron? Victoria Principal?
4. Which Apollo astronaut was NOT interviewed for Cosmic Log? Buzz Aldrin? Alan Bean? Pete Conrad? Harrison Schmitt?
5. Which magician has been interviewed for Cosmic Log? The Amazing Randi? The Amazing Kreskin? David Copperfield? Penn Jillette?
6. Which medium/channel/psychic has been interviewed for Cosmic Log? Mary T. Browne? Theresa Caputo? Allison Dubois? JZ Knight?
7. Which TV show has been the subject of Cosmic Log postings? “American Idol”? “Dancing With the Stars”? “The X-Files”? All of the above?
8. What is the “CLUB Club”? A hangout for Cosmic Log fans in Seattle back in the early days? A concept I proposed for an anti-theft device? A list of book recommendations? A members-only gallery of cosmic pictures?
9. What kind of celestial object got its name in part because of Cosmic Log? Asteroid? Comet? Crater? Mountain?
10. Who was the object named after? Douglas Adams? Alan Boyle? Stephen Hawking? Robert Heinlein?
I’ll provide the answers to both of the 10-question teasers on Sunday, the 10th anniversary, and if I’m in a generous mood for the start of the next 10 years, I may give away a book even if no one gets all of the Cosmic Log trivia questions right.
